Jessie Willcox Smith (1863-1935) was a remarkable figure of American Romanticism and Impressionism. She gained widespread recognition for her work, especially in children’s books, and is often compared to Mary Cassatt for her endearing portrayal of children.

The Golden Age of American Illustration

Smith was a member of the Red Rose Girls along with Violet Oakley and Elizabeth Shippen Green. Together, they became the cornerstone of the Golden Age of American illustration.

Smith studied at the Drexel Institute under Howard Pyle and became one of the most prominent female illustrators of her time.

Prolific Career and Legacy

Smith’s work appeared on magazine covers and in many popular children’s books, including “Little Women” and “The Child’s Garden of Verses.” Her illustrations graced every cover of Good Housekeeping from December 1917 through April 1933, earning her the title of the artist with the longest continuous run of illustrated magazine covers.
