Meet Cicely Mary Barker: The Artist Behind the Fairies

Cicely Mary Barker (1895–1973) was a British illustrator and poet best known for her Flower Fairies books.

First published in the 1920s, her work combined delicate, realistic watercolor paintings of flowers with charming fairy figures inspired by children she knew.

Her illustrations, published by Blackie & Son, are beloved for their fine botanical detail and whimsical storytelling.

Unlike many artists of her time, Barker painted each flower fairy to accurately match the structure and natural form of the plant it represented. The result? A magical yet scientifically respectful celebration of the natural world.

About the Spring Collection

The Book of Flower Fairies was originally published in 1927 and includes 24 fairy illustrations — each paired with a springtime bloom like Bluebell, Dandelion, May Flower, and Primrose.

These watercolors, now in the public domain in the U.S., reflect Barker’s love of nature and her deep Christian faith, woven gently into a world where fairies dance among blossoms.

This is the first in a series of seasonal collections. Be sure to check back for the summer and autumn fairy sets as they’re released!
